Beyond coaching clients to better health in the gym, I also coach other independent personal trainers on techniques for building a better business. The personal fitness industry is booming and more multifaceted than ever, but with so many available options, how do you make your services keep up with the competition? Good question!

I’ve spent over 10 years establishing my name in this industry and I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, what keeps the lights on and what causes companies to go under. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a brand new personal trainer, here are the 4 areas I focus on when advising my business coaching clients!

MINDSET

Your mindset is the glue that holds everything together, the foundation upon which your entire business is built. It may sound simplistic, but I believe that a business will never outperform a poor mindset. Sure, you can get by unnoticed for a while, but a short sighted, negative vision will always expose itself in the end. Remember, growing a successful small business is a long-term undertaking – it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

GOAL SETTING

If your mindset is the foundation of your business, then goal setting is blueprint for constructing the rest of the house. You have the big picture plan; setting incremental, achievable goals is the path to get there. Similar to helping someone get in shape, setting small benchmarks along the way always makes a large task feel less overwhelming.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Besides financial resources, the greatest limitation of any small business owner is time. Learning to implement solid time management practices is one of the strongest advantages you can give yourself. We’re all constrained by the same 24 hours each day, however, successful people teach themselves how to truly maximize their time.

SYSTEMS AND OPERATIONS

Lastly, going into business on your own requires plenty of organization. Billing, appointments, customer service, HR, and taxes all fall on your shoulders when you run a one person show. Save yourself a lot of headaches and invest in quality company systems and operations from the start!
